Riemann, Topology, and Physics
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (June, 1999)
Authors: Mikhail Ilich Monastyrskii, Roger Cooke, James King, Victoria King, Michael Monastyrsky, and Mikhail Il'ich Monastyrskii
Average review score:

Excellent
This is a translation of two quite small Russian books. The first is a biography of Riemann, the second a review of "Geometrical" physics, recently updated. Even the biography includes some mathematics which I did not fully understand, but it is a great introduction, and it's good to get your feet a little wet! The book is small and very readable. I recommend it to students interested in understanding the relationships between physics, mathematics, and geometry. A gentle introduction to the "technical" journey.

Scratch Built!: A Celebration of the Static Scale Airplane Modellers Craft
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (May, 1993)
Authors: John Alcorn, George Lee, and Peter Cooke
Average review score:

Inspiring and well-illustrated.
The photos in this book show what is possible in the art of model airplane building. After looking through the book you may be tempted (as I was) to throw away all your model planes because the chances are they aren't anywhere near the quality of the ones in this book. But that's what the book is for, to improve the readers skill by showing what is possible. If you build model planes, this book is very worthwhile.

Seeing New York: History Walks for Armchair and Footloose Travelers (Critical Perspectives on the Past)
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (April, 1995)
Author: Hope Cooke
Average review score:

interesting subject; interesting writer
This book is a very interesting exploration of old New York, written by an interesting woman, Hope Cooke, who among other things was married to the prince of Sikkim, and (enjoyed?) much publicity in the 60's. I read her autobiography after reading this, but actually, she come across as being much more interesting in this scholarly book. I wish she would write more on the subject of old New York.

Moving Internal Services to a Market Economy
Moving Internal Services from Soviet-Style Monopoly to a Market System

This book is an excellent introduction to the implementation of shared services by people with lots of pragmatic experience. It's required reading at my company.

If you are just starting out, it provides a good map of what shared services are and how to go about implementing. If you have done it, it might remind you of the original vision.

Also, the book is well written, making it easy and enjoyable to read--which means that I actually read it instead of leaving it on the table hoping for osmosis to kick in.

As someone involved the creation of software to automate and support shared services at Newscale, I found the focus on "running Shared Services as business" (and all that implies) the clearest difference between the new way and the old way.

This means, frankly, that while cutting costs is the primary driver for shared services, the path has to take account five elements that are non-obvious today: 1) how do I plan and execute my service workflows, 2) how do I enable my internal customers to procure my offers and those of outsourcers? 3) how do I manage the business relationship with the business units, 4)how do I charge for services and manage the Shared Services business unit), 5) how do I design and create my service "products"?

In other words, run a business that produces value for customers at a profit -- just like a market economy. Which sounds obvious and simple, but it's not. Just ask the Russians...or the dotcoms.

Author: Carola Beresford-Cooke
Average review score:

A great study guide through Shiatsu school.....
Last year, I graduated from International School of Shiatsu in Doylestown, Pa. Prior to this school, I attended another Shiatsu school as well. Through both schools, this book was used as the main reference for me. I highly recommend this to anyone studying this wonderful art. It has all the detailed meridians, both standard and "Zen" and extensive info on the 5 elements. Buy it....you'll love it!!!

Sesame Street ABC
I bought this book for my son who is almost 3 and is learning sign language (he has apraxia and cannot speak). The clear photos of the signs are easy to understand and he was able to imitate many of them on his own. Presenting sign with his favorite Sesame Street characters kept his attention more than any other sign book we've bought to date. A SUPER book for any and every child (and parent)!

Average review score:

Sister for Sam
This was one of my favorite books as a child. At one time I had the entire collection, but somehow they magically disappeared over time. This would be a great collection to have once again. This book is essential to the collection. I remember reading this book night after night until I had the entire book down by heart. Truely a work of art.
